Emma, Grandpa, and Luna discover a mysterious treasure map hidden inside a library book.

One rainy afternoon, Emma was curled up on Grandpa’s couch with Luna, her fluffy gray cat, resting beside her.

Grandpa’s house was full of books.

Books on shelves.

Books on tables.

Books stacked beside chairs.

Emma loved every single one of them.

She reached for a thick, dusty book with a golden ship on the cover.

“Have we read this one before?” she asked.

Grandpa adjusted his glasses.

“I don’t believe we have.”

Emma carefully opened the book.

Something slipped out.

Plop.

A folded piece of paper landed on the rug.

Luna immediately pounced on it.

Emma giggled.

“It’s a map!”

Grandpa leaned closer.

It certainly looked like one.

The paper was yellow and crinkly. Tiny dotted lines zigzagged across it. There were pictures of palm trees, waves, and a big red X.

At the top, written in curly letters, were the words:

TREASURE OF PIRATE COVE

Emma’s eyes grew wide.

“A treasure map!” she whispered.

Grandpa smiled.

“Well now. That sounds promising.”

Luna meowed.

Emma unfolded the map completely.

There was one more message at the bottom.

To find the treasure, begin where stories sleep.

Emma looked up.

“Where do stories sleep?”

Grandpa looked around the room.

Then he smiled.

“I believe they sleep right here.”

He pointed toward his enormous bookshelf.

Emma grinned.

The adventure had already begun.

She and Grandpa hurried to the bookshelf while Luna trotted behind them with her tail held high.

Thousands of stories sat on the shelves.

Big books.

Little books.

Red books.

Blue books.

Then Emma spotted something.

“Look!”

On the very bottom shelf was a tiny wooden box.

It had a carved anchor on the lid.

Grandpa blinked.

“I’ve never noticed that before.”

Emma carefully opened it.

Inside was a small brass compass.

Its needle began spinning.

Round and round.

Round and round.

Then it stopped.

Pointing toward the window.

At the same moment, Luna jumped onto the windowsill.

She stared outside.

And meowed again.

Emma and Grandpa looked out the window.

Far in the distance, just beyond the trees, they could see something they had never noticed before.

A little cove.

And sticking up beside the water…

was a flag.

A black pirate flag.

Emma looked at Grandpa.

Grandpa looked at Emma.

Luna purred.

Then Grandpa smiled.

“I have a feeling,” he said, “that this treasure map might be real.”

Emma’s heart fluttered with excitement.

She carefully folded the map and tucked the compass into her pocket.

“Do you think there’s really treasure?” she asked.

Grandpa grinned.

“I suppose there’s only one way to find out.”

Outside, the rain had stopped.

And somewhere near the mysterious little cove, a brand-new adventure was waiting for them.
