The Rocket to Rainbow Planet

One evening, just after Mommy tucked Miles into bed, he noticed something glowing under his blanket.

It was a button.

Not a shirt button.

Not a toy button.

A shiny, rainbow-colored button that softly blinked:

Pink. Blue. Yellow. Green.

Miles sat up.

“Ooooh,” he whispered.

Beside him, Teddy perked up too.

Miles carefully pressed the button.

Click!

Suddenly, his room filled with twinkling lights.

The stars on his blanket began to sparkle.

His nightlight glowed brighter.

Then, with a gentle whoooooosh, a tiny rocket appeared at the foot of his bed.

It was just the right size for one little boy and one very fluffy teddy bear.

A small door opened.

A golden sign unfolded.

It read:

TO: MILES

DESTINATION: RAINBOW PLANET

MISSION: HELP THE COLORS SHINE

Miles blinked.

Then he grinned.

“Mommy!” he called.

Mommy peeked into the room.

“Oh my,” she said with a smile. “That certainly looks like an adventure.”

“Will you come too?” asked Miles.

“I’d love to,” Mommy said.

She climbed into the rocket beside him, and Teddy squeezed onto Miles’s lap.

The little rocket’s engine hummed.

Brrrrrrr.

Whoooooosh!

Up they flew.

Past the roof.

Past the clouds.

Past the moon.

Past a group of sleepy stars that waved good evening.

Finally, they saw it.

Rainbow Planet.

It was round and beautiful and glowing with every color imaginable.

Pink rivers.

Blue trees.

Golden flowers.

Green hills.

Purple mountains.

But as the rocket landed, Miles noticed something strange.

The colors didn’t seem very bright.

The pink river looked pale.

The blue trees looked sleepy.

Even the golden flowers drooped a little.

A tiny rainbow creature waddled toward them.

It wore a scarf with every color of the rainbow.

“Oh dear,” it sighed. “You came just in time.”

“What happened?” asked Miles.

“The colors of Rainbow Planet are fading,” the little creature said.

Miles looked around.

Everything did seem a little dim.

“Can we help?” he asked.

The creature smiled.

“We certainly hope so. Long ago, the colors of this planet grew bright whenever someone shared joy, kindness, and wonder.”

Miles’s eyes grew wide.

“I know how to do those things!”

The little creature laughed.

“I had a feeling you might.”

Above them, one tiny yellow star twinkled.

Then another.

And another.

It seemed Rainbow Planet had been waiting for Miles all along.

The little creature pointed toward a winding, sparkling path.

“At the end of that trail,” it said, “is the Rainbow Crystal. If we can make it shine again, all the colors will return.”

Miles looked at Mommy.

He looked at Teddy.

Then he looked at the shimmering path.

He smiled his biggest smile.

“I think,” he said, “we have a mission.”

And together, they took their very first steps across Rainbow Planet.
